NBA 2K13 Review

Yeah, yeah, this review is kind of late – however, can you blame me? I was too busy trying to get VC points! They are so hard to come by until I got a few tips from some friends. At any rate, take a look at my Likes and Dislikes for the new installment of NBA2K13 and see whether they take the franchise to the next level, or if it falls flat on it’s face.

Likes:

Different Modes

There are many different modes that you can play with this game. So much so that you will really be playing this for a while trying to master each one. Right now I’m developing my player who got drafted to the Grizzlies. You can have conversations with the GM, boost your twitter following, have post game conferences and negotiate contracts. It’s really cool to kind of play the game from that perspective. NBA2K13 is by no means the first game to employ the ability to build your character from scratch, but I really like the way it was executed here. It really brings the game to what we see happening in the NBA today.

If developing your own player is not your thing, you can develop your team just the way you want to in the “My Team” mode. Execute trades, and build a powerhouse of a team. Not your thing – you can play games with up-to-date teams at your leisure. You can also play online with your friends in still more modes like “Quick Match Team Up” and “Tournaments”.

Shoes

The Shoes man! If you are a sneaker fiend you can really spend a lot of time in this area. You can pick from hundreds of pairs of shoes, and you can even modify the colors down to the rubber souls!  You can choose from different brands as well including 2K Generic brand, Spalding, Under Armor, Reebok, Converse, Nike, Jordans, and more. After you finish editing your shoe you can even name them.

Moves

There are tons of moves to choose from to leave your opponent in the dust. from crazy dunks, alley-oops, hook shots, crossovers, fade-aways. Even hesitations, and slight post-up moves. the lean-back that Kobe always does, the shimmey, they are all there and some. Not only that, but there are even moves that are particular to star players so Dirk’s crazy unstoppable awkward fade-away is present, as Derrick Roses ball-handling. I really don’t mind just watching a game play out because it really is entertaining to watch. I end up rooting for a team even though I know it isn’t real.

Music

The music is Boss. Period. Produced by Jay-Z as you no doubt have heard repeatedly, but it goes a long way. I think the era of generic video game beat is now fading as more deals are made with video game companies and famous musicians. You can of course edit the track listing and even add your own library in the editor but the titles are quite good including Nas, Daft Punk, U2 and of course Jay-Z among the line-up. Full Track listing can be found here.

Dislikes:

Graphics

There were times when I was really wondering about the graphic quality of the game over all. For instance – the screen with the starter line-up just before the game starts looks last gen. Seriously. There are other screens like this scattered throughout which really has me scratching my head as most of the game’s graphic quality is top-notch. Also, if your on PS3 make sure “PS – Smoothing” is turned on so the in-game graphics looks as good as it is meant to be. I also found the background screens with all the colors and moving parts to be really quite distracting. The interface could really be cleaned up, but that really is aesthetic preference. However, the game designers could really do something about it.

Too Many Moves

Yeah, I had moves in the section of Likes, but dang there are a lot of them to master. I end up trying to perform all of them and end up getting the ball stripped. Take it from me, just master a few of them – the ones that work for you and stick with those.

VC Points

I’m questionable with these. It definitely drives the game forward, but does everything have to cost these VC Points – even skills? Also, why do the cost so blasted much!? I can understand shoes, and unique articles of clothing. I can even understand training camps etc. but I would much rather my skills being upped based on my style of play and exploits on the court. It gives me more of a sense of accomplishment rather then me putting the game on coach mode to get easy points and just buying a decent jump shot.

Product Placements

the are everywhere this time around. Sprint, Nike, Jordan, Gatorade. You can spot them a mile away. Though they do add some credibility to the game and make it close to what goes on in reality, it does seem to be a little distracting at times. What if I don’t like Gatorade? Or I prefer a different brand? I think they may be alienating a few folks with this move, but that’s just my two cents. It really didn’t dampen my enthusiasm for playing the game so take that with a grain of salt.

Summary:

Over all this is my favorite NBA2K game so far in the franchise. They seem to keep the stuff that works and continue improving on everything else. Seeing the Dream Team, and all the other old school players is just fantastic and they all look so good graphically. I love the level of control of my own player, or team as well as over the shoes my character wears. It really makes me feel like I’m apart of the action which I suppose is the point. Good move 2K, good move. I’m sure in the coming years, they’ll tighten up on the background graphic elements and when that day comes, I will definitely be rejoicing. But until then, this game is still a winner.

All New NBA 2K13 Trailer Featuring Biggie Smalls and Puff Daddy!

Looks like 2K is outdoing themselves with the music for this game. They’re pulling out all the stops with this one. Check out the trailer below featuring the cut by Momentous which is based off of the song “Victory” by Puff Daddy and the Family. Biggie Smalls is rapping over the beat while the featured NBA Ballers are breaking ankles. Arguably one of the best trailers yet for NBA 2K13 don’t you think?

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Release Date Announced

If you are like me, then you are cautiously optimistic about the next installment in the Metal Gear Series. The next game will follow Raiden as the main character and his exploits as the coolest ninja to ever walk the earth. This game doesn’t look like it will follow the traditional Metal Gear path, instead giving the user more of an open field to play in. Raiden can cut pretty much anything in the game, and the moves are ridiculously outlandish.

The story takes place three years after the events in Guns of the Patriots – so don’t worry about this new game messing any of the story line up. I’m excited about the game to say the least and can’t wait till February 19th 2013.

Will you be in line?

New 2K13 Screens and Gameplay Footage

I have procured, for your Basketball enjoyment, new game footage and screens for the next installment of the 2K franchise.

One of the significant changes that the Devs talk about is the analog stick functionality. Instead of the shot stick – it is now in control of your dribble – which by the way I should totally get credit for since I’ve been yelling that at the screen for years. At any rate, they finally listened to me and you can now break people’s ankles at will. This game is shaping up to be something quite desirable. Check the video below as well as the images.

Sneak Peek at Sony Playstation Holiday Titles

We got to take a look at some of the upcoming titles on the Sony PlayStation 3. I anticipate a pretty good gaming season toward the end of the year, but I would say two games really stood out.

God of War Ascension:

I spoke with David Hewitt who manages the design team and he took me through a round. The game wasn’t finished, but it looked really good. Everything looks to be on a grander scale, and Kratos is still as grumpy and violent as ever. However, there was a puzzling moment where Kratos apparently saves someone. Freakish right? I think that may play into the overall story, but that’s just a hunch. But don’t worry, he’s still ripping minions apart and decapitating things. There was also some brain exposure. Yup, you read that right. They’ve also added a new dynamic to the game called “Life Cycle” where you can rebuild anything that’s been destroyed. You can rebuild completely or rebuild up to a certain point. There was a part of the demo where Kratos was able to navigate to another section of the map by climbing a partially destroyed area with the Life Cycle power. Rage mode has also been tweaked to automatically trigger once you’ve reached enough orbs. The designers feared that we weren’t using it enough so now they are forcing it! I complained that if it triggers, I don’t want to have it wasted on weaklings or have it triggered when I’ve just ended a big fight. However, David countered by letting me know that they’ve balanced the fights so that that shouldn’t happen too often, and Rage Mode happens more often all together so it shouldn’t bee too big a deal. We’ll see – the game comes out March 12th.

Assassins Creed III:

I was thoroughly impressed with the demo that was shown. I’ll be honest, Assassin’s creed hasn’t really been my favorite game. It’s really cool, and beautiful to look at, but for some reason, I just wasn’t drawn to it. However, I think that might change with Assassins Creed III. The game takes place around the Revolutionary War in the time-line of the United States and there are a few things I’d like to point out. First, our assassin’s movements through the trees looked really fluid. I note it because it must have been really hard to program. It’s trees! Not buildings, or rooftops, which are more flat and linear. I was really surprised at how well they pulled that off. Secondly, you can assassinate with any weapon – not just the hidden blade. This makes your assassinations a lot more fluid as well. I think you see the point I’m trying to make. Lastly, is ship combat. Yea, somehow or another, you end up commanding a ship, and it’s really cool. You see the guys raising the masts and all that other stuff. Your first mate is yelling orders and everyone is working as you steer the ship around the ocean. You’re battles are cool as you send cannon balls hurling through the air towards your enemies. It’s a really fun new dynamic to the game that I personally can’t wait to play.

NBA 2K13 Cover Revealed!

The new cover of NBA 2K13 has been revealed today! The New Cover is three people deep and features the younger cats in the NBA. They are being called the “New Dynasty.” Can’t wait to play to see what improvements the game makes to this new chapter in the 2K franchise. They always have something up their sleeve and the music is always on point. List of artists aren’t known just yet, but will update you guys when that’s available. The Game comes out October 2nd.

As for the cover, what do you think? Personally, I think it’s not too bad, however, I want to know if it should have been a face-off between the “New Dynasty” and the “Old Dynasty” – But I guess that doesn’t sound quite right, but you get what I meant. Some of the OGs like Kareem, Isaiah, Moses, etc… vs the young guns. Just my thought…what are yours’?

2K Sports Crowns Kevin Durant, Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose as Cover Athletes for
NBA® 2K13

Trio of young superstars represents the “New Dynasty” of NBA legends

New York, NY – June 26, 2012 – 2K Sports today announced that the Oklahoma City
Thunder’s Kevin Durant, Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin and the Chicago Bulls’
Derrick Rose have been crowned the cover athletes for NBA® 2K13, the next
installment of the top-selling and top-rated NBA video game simulation franchise*.

”Being crowned as one of the NBA 2K13 cover athletes is a huge honor and something I
always dreamt about,” said Durant, who won his third straight scoring title and led
the Thunder franchise to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1996. “It’s
definitely humbling to grace the cover after the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic
Johnson, and Larry Bird.”

“There’s so much young talent around the NBA, so it’s very exciting to be chosen for
NBA 2K’s ‘New Dynasty’ alongside Kevin and Derrick,” added Griffin, who helped lead
the Clippers to their first postseason since 2006. “The NBA 2K series has always
been my first choice when I want to get a game in.”

“It’s a dream come true to be one of the cover athletes for NBA 2K13,” commented
Rose, the 2010-11 NBA Most Valuable Player, who led the Bulls to a league-best 50-16
record this season. “I’ve worked closely with 2K Sports since NBA 2K10, and I’m
honored to follow in the footsteps of Michael Jordan as the latest Chicago Bull to
be featured on the cover.”

In their young but impressive careers, Rose, Durant and Griffin have each taken the
NBA by storm. All three are past winners of the NBA Rookie of the Year award, and
have also amassed eight All-Star berths, three scoring titles, and one Most Valuable
Player award between them.

“There are many young superstars in today’s NBA, but we’ve selected three incredible
athletes for the cover of NBA 2K13 that represent the NBA well,” concluded Jason
Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “It’s clear to us that Blake,
Derrick and Kevin are the most deserving guys to inherit the NBA 2K cover from
Jordan, Magic and Bird.”

Developed by Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio, NBA 2K13 is not yet rated by the
ESRB and will be available on October 2, 2012 in North America and October 5, 2012
internationally. The Wii U version of the title will be available during the holiday
season. Fans are encouraged to pre-order now at participating retailers in order to
receive the downloadable NBA All-Star content package presented by Sprite on day one

Now That’s Awesome! Pre-Ordering Amazing Spiderman Unlocks Playable Stan Lee

Here’s one for the fan-boys out there. If you pre-order the upcoming Amazing Spiderman game you will get the Stan Lee Adventure pack.

Stan Lee will have all the powers of your favorite “Web-Head” and you can fight crime with Stan Lee’s character. Stan Lee actually voices the character entirely as well so it’s not just a cheap model-swap out. If you complete the Adventure Pack there will be some type of reward or something.

Personally, I think it’s worth it as the game looks like it’s shaping up to be something cool. You can check our initial opinions here.

You can also get the Rhino challenge as well which will allow you to play as the Rhino himself causing mayhem through the streets of Manhattan. That might be some fun…sign me up!
